Taking “Pointless” Photos

Let me clarify what i define to be “Pointless” is a photo that was taken in a moment where you judged it to look good, but a photo you would not look back on. Not everything we take or do has to be the next greatest thing and not everything has to have a greater purpose to it.

I am rather confident to say that everybody has taken photos like these. Maybe photos of a meal that we never posted or simple textures found. We don’t need to make something great of something that does not have any substance to begin with. This idea is an imaginary categorization we make that we do not feel proud of.

In its raw form, every photo I snap is pointless in the bigger picture. No picture i have taken has an effect onto myself or others. What am I chasing? What am i seeking to gain from partaking in capturing photos? Unlike writing, our brains are not wired to create stronger connections to that image when i click the shutter button. To each person, their reasoning is personal. For mine, I hypothesise that I am seeking an outlet to channel the energy from anxiety’s symptom of hyper vigilance into a parallel, looking for moments of mundane beauty to make this life just a little more bearable.
